On August 23, the Wall Street Journal reported on the latest CDC statistics for Americans’ average life expectancy. It’s now a measly 77 years.
If I’m an average American, I may have only seven years left! At least that’s immediately what came to my mind as I read the article.
Getting old is something no one, including me, cares to dwell on, but at a certain point, there’s no denying the fact that I (and maybe you) have become a senior citizen. Articles like this serve as an unwelcome reminder.
I’m able to joke about that article now, but I have to tell you – when I read those stats, I was taken aback. Heck, I’ve been telling myself I’ll last till I’m 92! After all, I’m in great health, my mind and body are strong and fit, and I’ve got lots of other factors in my favor.
Still, there’s no denying, death gets more inevitable with every passing day.
I’ve always loved that Latin phrase “carpe diem.” Along the same lines, I also like that Bible verse in Psalm 90, “Teach us to number our days…” We need reminders like that. Life is indeed precious.
Or, we could keep in mind what my husband says about life – it’s like a roll of toilet paper, the closer you get to the end, the faster it goes.
Let’s all carpe diem.
