Have you ever written a book? Odds are you’ve thought about it but haven’t done it.

How come? Because it’s harder than you expected. A lot harder.

So if you know someone who has somehow managed to write a book and get it published (which is just as hard as writing it), you applaud their efforts, right? That’s great, but you know what the author would really appreciate? Here’s a list of a few ideas. You won’t be able to do them all, but every single one of them will be cherished by your author friend.

  • Buy the book in any format.
  • Write a nice review about it on Amazon, Goodreads, Barnes & Noble, etc. On Goodreads, add the book to your “currently reading” list.
  • If you didn’t like the book and can’t write a good review, keep it to yourself. Everyone has different taste. No author can please every reader. When’s the last time you enjoyed a book written by Hemingway?
  • Give others the book as a gift. For a personal touch, get it signed by the author.
  • Write a favorable post about the book on social media.
  • Comment on and share the author’s blogposts and social media posts.
  • Tell others about the book—why you liked it and why you think they’ll enjoy it.
  • Ask your local library to order a copy of the book.
  • Tell book clubs or groups that need speakers about the book and author.

That’s it! Do even one or two of these and your author friend will love you forever.
