I was recently on a podcast called “We’ve Got Books.” Having been on a number of podcasts, and also having once been a talk radio host, guesting on this latest podcast was easy and fun.
For many authors, as well as anyone with a message they want to promote, podcasts have become one of the best ways to share that message, connect with new audiences, and establish yourself as an authority in your field.
But simply showing up isn’t enough—you want to leave a lasting impression. Here’s how you can maximize your impact:
Know Your Purpose
Why are you doing the podcast? Are you promoting a book? Sharing expertise? Expanding your reach? Knowing your goal helps shape your talking points and makes your message more compelling.
Research the Podcast and Host
A great guest tailors their conversation to the podcast’s audience. Listen to past episodes, understand the host’s style, and familiarize yourself with their typical format. This preparation ensures you align with their audience’s interests.
Craft Your Key Messages
Rather than winging it, have 3-5 key points you want to emphasize. Stories, examples, and actionable tips make your message stick. Avoid rambling—concise, engaging responses keep the conversation flowing.
Be Conversational, Not Promotional
Instead of constantly plugging your book, business, or project, focus on providing value. If listeners find your insights helpful, they’ll naturally want to learn more about you and your books.
Smiley Voice
Even though listeners can’t see you, they can hear the warmth and enthusiasm in your voice. Vary your pitch, pace, and length of your answers. Use natural inflections, emphasize key points, and — this is very powerful — pause for effect to keep listeners engaged. Imagine you’re talking to a friend to help you sound more natural, approachable, and engaging.
Have a Call to Action (Without Being Pushy)
At the end of the episode, most hosts will ask where people can find you. Instead of saying, “Find me on social media,” direct listeners to something specific and of value., e.g., “If you enjoyed this conversation, you can grab a free chapter of my book at (yourwebsite).”
Optimize Your Audio & Environment
If you have an external microphone or headset, great, but don’t stress over it if you don’t. Computer mics have come a long way and yours is probably fine. Do the podcast in a quiet space with no background noise, and make sure your internet connection is stable. Bad audio can distract from even the best content.
Engage and Promote
Your job doesn’t end when the recording stops. Share the episode on your platforms, tag the host, and engage with comments. The more you promote, the more valuable you become as a guest, increasing the chances of future invitations.
Final Thought: Make Every Episode Count
Being a great podcast guest isn’t just about one appearance—it’s about building relationships, expanding your reach, and delivering real value to listeners. Approach each interview with authenticity, enthusiasm, and preparation, and you’ll leave a lasting impression.
